Above is a video tour of the digital Zine that I have made for this small series of photographs. After having all the photographs edited, I thought that the best way to display them together would be in the format of a Zine. In an exhibition setting, the Zine can sit under the projection of the cinematic piece that I am in the process of editing.
When putting the Zine together, I started by placing some of the images that I thought would work well together in order to build a narrative. I wanted an image on a page so that the viewer can focus on one photograph at a time. As the series is full with 15 photographs, I was also aware that I do not want the Zine to feel too thin when I print it. There is no direct narrative of the photographs. The Zine begins with two portraits, one of myself and the other of Matthew who came on the expedition with me. I then sequenced the photographs in an order which shows the beauty and progression of the path. The photographs are either shot by looking behind and seeing where we have come from, or looking out to the sea that was constantly parallel to us. This method of photographing is reflective. I am photographing the land that we have already travelled through and experienced time with, the vibrancy of the photographs represent the good energy that was going through Matthew and I when we were walking the path.
After the sequencing of the photographs, I decided that I would play with adding text one the empty page next to the image. I wanted to do this so that I could give prompts of thought to the viewer while they are looking at the photographs. Thoughts that I was having while on the walk and thoughts that were being generated after I edited and reflected on the photographs that I had made. I feel like the text adds value to the meaning of the images and gives the viewer more time on the open page to think about the relationship between myself and the landscape.
When I print the Zine, I am going to perfectly bind it. This is so that the Zine has a similar quality to a photobook and feels good in the viewer's hand. I like the idea of producing a series of Zines that showcase the adventures and journeys that I go on as a landscape photographer and explore. I have decided that “Ocean Path” is going to be a chapter of a bigger series named “Grounded Routes''Routes”. Within the nature of this module, I am going to produce one more zine and cinematic piece that is going to be a reflection of a journey across Dartmoor.
